One of the real challenges of trying to grow your business is that most of the reading and learning you would want to do isnt appropriate. Most business books and case studies are written by and about large businesses and trust me not every solution is a once size fits all.

Loss leaders and giveaways might work for giant retailers like Asda but may not be appropriate for the corner store. Chat bots, self service checkouts and automated fatuous e mail autoresponses might be OK for giants like Trainline with thousands of customers who have no other choice but not for your growing business.

Leverage your differences. If you are still able to answer your phones, if you have employees with expertise who still care about the customer don’t follow the big company example of keeping them away from the people paying their wages with circular and time consuming automated switchboards that fail to provide any level of service. Make the most of what makes you unique, human beings who genuinely want to help their customer.

Big companies often set a pretty poor standard when it comes to looking after people, whether customers or employees. Why would you want to follow that as an example?
