Often, we make things way too complicated. We get fixated on short cuts and hacks and trends and soundbites. On how we look rather than on the value we provide. Business is often way simpler than we tell ourselves.
Businesses only exist because they provide value to a customer. We need to understand what that value is. The easy way to build your business is to be really, really good at whatever it is that the customer finds to be of value. Understand the basics.
A decorator only needs to be a half decent decorator, turn up when he says he will and tidy up after himself, each time and every time and his reputation and client base will grow. A restaurant only needs to provide consistently good food in a pleasant environment for its reputation and following to grow. The same is true for whatever business you are in, I imagine. Tell me if that is not true.
Very often we make our life more difficult because we don’t do the basics well enough consistently enough, which means that we drive our clients away and therefore have to find more new clients.
The greatest performers in the world are consistently practising the basics. Even when they can perform very effectively, they insist on practising the basics.
There is no point in perfecting the fancy footwork or the trick shots if your basic ball control is letting you down.
So the questions for today are:
- Do you really understand what your customers want and need from you?
- On a scale of 0 to 10 how do they rate you?
- What do you need to do to increase that score by 2 points?
- When will you begin?
