So I was listening to Joe Ely’s classic track ‘Are you listening Lucky’ when I came across an article by the Gallup organisation called “Why Trust in Leaders Is Faltering and How to Gain It Back”. Read it here

They strongly made the point that trusted leaders communicate clearly and that listening is a large part of communication.

  • How often and how well do you listen?

Over recent days I have become increasingly aware of how little and how badly we actually listen to our people. Whether that is because of the speed of business today, remote and hybrid working, arrogance or we have simply gotten out of the habit of doing it there can be little doubt that failure to circulate with, get to know and actually listen to our people so that we can understand their hopes, dreams and fears is a major part of leadership.

Surveys are helpful but cannot substitute for honest two way communication. So let me ask again. How much time do you spend listening to your team members and how well do they think you listen?

To do:

  1. Honestly assess yourself and your organisation.
  2. Speak to some team members to calibrate your assessment.
  3. Schedule some time in your diary go speak to team members and listen to them
  4. Act on what you hear.
  5. Notice the impact it has.
  6. Rinse and repeat.
