Are You A Supermodel?
No I don’t mean do you look good in a bikini.
- Are you modelling the behaviour you expect your people to show?
There is a lot written about leadership and in my experience not enough of it is about modelling. It was Albert Schweitzer who said, ‘Example is leadership’.
If a parent exhorts their child not to drink, but at the same time continues to do so herself, what is the child likely to do; do what the parent says or do what the parent does? People with perceived status and authority, like parents and bosses, are often unaware of the powerful and unconscious example they set.
If you are a parent you are possibly aware of the way your children imitate you and not necessarily the you that is you at your best. As a leader you will be constantly observed and imitated. It can be scary as you start to notice it. You will be the model that others will unconsciously emulate. You had better be a supermodel.
There is nothing that will destroy our leadership credentials quicker than saying one thing and doing another. Probably the least offensive description of such a person is a hypocrite. Who would willingly follow a hypocrite? We need to be better than that.
To do:
- Schedule some quiet time to think deeply and honestly about the example you set.
- Get some perspective. Speak to a coach, a friend, a trusted advisor. What can they notice about your behaviour that you can’t?
- Examine the performance of your team, and ask yourself who they could possibly be modelling themselves on.
- Understand that a business is always a reflection and amplification of the person or people at the top.
- Get close colleagues to suggest three behaviours that you are going to stop and three you are going to start.
- Arrange regular check ins so they can let you know what progress you are making.
