Always Remember

A business is like a machine. It is designed and built to do a specific job. So it follows that in order to create a successful business we need to be very clear on what that job is.

The main difference between a business and a machine is the fact that most of the parts of the business are human beings, and unlike mechanical things, human things have thoughts and feelings and emotions.

A mechanical piece will behave consistently and predictably, time after time after time. All human beings struggle with consistency. We get bored and tired and upset and happy. We get motivated and demotivated, energised or tired, inspired or pissed off. We are however relatively predictable.

It is our job as leaders to understand the individual nature of everyone we come into contact with. Only then can we co-create an environment in which people can perform at their best. That is the role of a leader.

Remember those words of Homer Simpson, “If adults don’t like their jobs they don’t go on strike. They just go in every day and do it really half-arsed”.

So the questions for today are:

1. How many of my stakeholders are performing at their best right now?
2. What can I do to increase that number?
3. What do I need to do to help just one individual to perform at a higher level?
4. When am I going to dop that?
