A Question of Perspective?

• When you look out of your own eyes, what do you see?

We all think we are normal. We think that what we see is the truth and it is the same thing that everybody sees. We find it difficult to understand why or how somebody else could see the same things as I am seeing but see them differently.

One of the great advantages of helping people to understand themselves and become more self aware is the realisation that we are all different and the better understanding of what those differences might mean, specifically.

It is great to develop greater flexibility of our own perspectives and biases. It will only help in developing empathy, a great and necessary driver in human connection. And that is important because we don’t win as individuals but as groups, or teams and for groups to function well there has to be connection.

A good starting place is to develop looking at any scenario from each of the three positions.

To do:

1. In any situation, as you look out from your position, position 1, notice what you are noticing, hear what you are hearing and feel what you are feeling.
2. Mentally switch to position 2. The position of the person you are interacting with and try to understand what they are noticing, thinking, hearing, seeing and feeling. How is it different from position 1? What does it reveal about you (position 1)?
3. Imagine you are a fly high up on the wall looking down at the scene playing out in front of you. You are now in position 3. What does this reveal to you about the interaction of the individuals you are observing?
4. How will adopting each of the three positions cause you to modify your behaviour?
