A Different Game

If you came up the hard way, the chances are you reached the leadership level because you are a winner. You probably found a way to get things done; to make things happen. That’s what made you successful, got you noticed and got you into a leadership role.

But you may now be struggling and you may not be sure why. You have always been successful but now you are mostly frustrated.

No matter how hard you try you seem to be surrounded by idiots, hell bent on getting in the way rather than smoothing the way.

The fact is you are now playing a different game. Success is no longer about what you can make happen. Success is about what you can inspire, lead and motivate your team to make happen.

It is the difference between a virtuoso musician and the conductor of an orchestra. It matters little whether the conductor can even play a note. The conductor’s job is to make sure everyone is playing the same music at their collective best. That takes a different set of skills and a different game plan.

As the legendary Jack Welch said “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.”

So the questions for this week are;

• How much time and effort are you putting into growing your people?
• On a scale of 0 to 10 how engaged are they?
• If you don’t have a recognised means of measuring engagement divide the score above by 2 and subscribe to a proven system.
• What is your people development strategy and process?
