100 Percent
‘To what degree do you think the boss is responsible for the performance of any of his people?’ my client asked.
It was a genuine question, and it deserved a genuine answer and it was also a critical learning point. After years of coaching, it didn’t take me long to form an answer but I took a moment before responding ‘100 percent’.
‘But what if he just isn’t doing the stuff?’ he asked.
‘Well who is responsible for his training?’ I replied.
‘His manager’ was the response.
‘So’, I said, ‘The Boss is 100% responsible for that person knowing how to do the job’.
‘But what if he knows what to do but just isn’t doing it?’,
‘Well’ I replied, ‘Who is responsible for letting him know how important that job is, how it allows us to deliver what we need to deliver to the customer and how it fits in with all of the other jobs in your organisation. In other words, who is responsible for motivating him?’
‘The manager’ was the response.
‘100 percent’ I added.
‘But what if he knows what to do and how important it is and still doesn’t do it well enough or consistently enough?’.
‘OK’ I said ‘If you are absolutely certain that the manager has properly trained, and motivated and communicated all of these things and the individual is still not doing the job to a high enough standard. Who’s decision is it to keep that person in that job?’.
This time the answer was slower and more hesitant. ‘It’s the manager’ ‘Of course it is. 100 percent.’
I could see the penny drop. Whichever way we cut it the performance of any individual, any team, any organisation is 100% the responsibility of the person at the top. Hopefully, lesson learned and now that the lesson is learned I can help the client develop the skills and understanding to now become the leader of a high performing team.
