True Genius

I am often struck by how often clients refer to right and wrong. They may say things like ‘I did X, I don’t know whether that was right or not’. I will often point out that there is no right or wrong, only choices. Which can seem like a bland, often trite response until we take the time to think about it. What might be a good choice in one situation could be a poor choice in another, slightly different situation. Wisdom is the result of making better choices, more often and success is the inevitable result of doing the right things in sufficient quantities over a long enough period of time. One of the inherent challenges comes from the natural yin-yang of human nature. We tend to lean towards one or other extremes in any moment. ‘I can either do this quickly or accurately’. Such thinking represents a false dichotomy, often referred to as the tyranny of the ‘or’. Can you do this quickly and accurately? True genius comes from the ability to embrace both sides of the equation. One of the most pressing, as business becomes more technology driven, all businesses are now technology businesses, is to fully master the human side of that equation at the same time.
