They say that culture eats strategy for breakfast. So, when recruiting you need to be aware whether a new addition to the team is likely to add to your culture or destroy it. You need to know this in advance, not as an afterthought.

If your culture is a strength for you and your team, why would you risk ruining it with one badly judged hire? So, you need to be able to clarify and illuminate your culture, in some detail. You need to be clear on the core traits and values that complement and support your great culture and that are required in every person.

This is an important exercise as it will provide a blueprint for your ideal team member, irrespective of their individual job.

If this sounds like an exercise you might do to define your ideal customer, that’s because it is. Spend as much time creating your ideal employee as you do your ideal customer.

So the questions for today are:

  • Can you spot a mismatch in advance?
