Your rate of growth is directly related to the quality of people on your team. So are your stress levels, your enjoyment levels and your financial performance. In fact, the number 1 decision is who you recruit. Make a bad selection and I guarantee life will be harder than it needs to be.

It’s a pity then, that so many of us are so bad at recruiting the right people.

Recruiting starts well before you even think about placing a recruitment ad or speaking to a recruitment agency.

We all know that selling a product which is a dog or not fit for purpose is hard work and difficult. So too is trying to recruit the best people if your firm is not known as a great place to work. And in these days of social media people will know.

The first job of recruiting is to become the employer of choice in your industry, area or sector and ideally in all three. If you do, you will have no end of talent beating a path to your door. I believe it is harder to get a job in Google than a place at Harvard.

So the questions for today are:

  • Would your current team recommend your firm as a place to work to their friends and family?
  • Do you know?
  • Do you measure it? It is called eNPS (employee net promoter score)
  • Do you know what they value about working in your firm?
  • Do you know what frustrates them?
  • Do you have a deliberate strategy to become the employer of choice?
