Gravity

If your business isn’t really flying right now, the reason could well be the same thing that stops you and I floating up to the clouds. Gravity.

Gravity is an invisible force that keeps things on the ground. The gravity that keeps your business from flying is also usually invisible too. It is the gravity that comes from spending more time and energy ‘administering’ what we have built than developing the future potential.

As a business grows our energy is inevitably drawn away from growth and towards maintenance of what we have already developed. We tend to get absorbed in the minutiae of making things better or fixing problems rather than continuing to grow the business.

Of course, fixing problems can be important but if that is what you are spending all of your energy on, who is spending energy on growth?

Where your energy is directed is a choice, but it is easy to divert our energy and blame the government or the market or our competitors or customers for the lack of growth but is that really the case?

So the questions for today are:

• How much of your time and energy is expended solely on growing the business?
• How much of your time is spent fixing problems of the past?
• Whose job is it to grow the business and how much focus does that get?
• Fixing delivery issues is important, of course, but should the responsibility for that lie with the same person who is responsible for growing the business? Bearing in mind that the man that chases two rabbits catches neither?
