Do you design your own company culture?
Naively I thought that culture could be influenced, but not much more. I now realise that our culture can, and should, be designed.
In fact if I were creating a new business, I believe that designing the culture would be job number 1.
Why? Well to give any business the best chance of success I realise, after 20 years of coaching business leaders to ever greater success, that the most important factor is populating the business with people who are not only capable and competent but who want to achieve what the business wants to achieve and who work well together.
The job of the leader then is to coach that team to ever greater heights in the service of the customer.
If, on the other hand, we fill the company with people who may be brilliant individuals but who do not want the same things as the business wants and who do not work well together, we have just made the job of the leader more impossible and more exhausting.
So the questions for today are:
- Have you designed the culture of your business?
- Are you clear on what the business wants to achieve and why?
- Have you (constantly and repeatedly) explained that to your team in a compelling and inspiring way?
- Are your hand picked team enrolled on the same mission?
