How conscious are you of your culture

How conscious are you of your culture on a minute by minute, day by day basis?

As a young leader I was intensely conscious of the importance of culture although I would have probably called it team spirit back then. I would work very hard to try to develop the team spirit that I thought I would enjoy and that would benefit the business, team members and customers alike.

Looking back I can see that my most successful times were when the team spirit was at its strongest in any particular business, but I am also conscious that often my focus drifted away from team spirit when other demands stole the focus, systems, processes, financial priorities and growth for instance and it was during those times that life and business got harder and less enjoyable.

Nowadays I hear myself saying more and more frequently that all strategy is fundamentally a people strategy. I realise that whatever the business, having the right people in the right seats doing the right things right is the foundation for success whether your business is software or making widgets.

Culture can, and should be, consciously and thoughtfully designed and created and that is a full time job.

So the questions for today are:

• How much of your time do you consciously spend working on your culture?
• Who owns the development of culture in your firm?
• Have you allowed your culture to grow wild or have you carefully and consciously cultivated it like an award winning garden?
• On a scale of 0 to 10 how much of a positive asset is your culture?
