Mediocrity

I believe everyone has something that they can do excellently well and when we do that one thing we create our own little world of excellence, we demonstrate our own particular genius.

Our genius nourishes us. It inspires others. It brings the best of us into the world.

Not living in our strengths results in mediocrity and mediocrity doesn’t nourish anyone, least of all ourselves. It causes stress and misery.

What is true for an individual is also broadly true for groups and organisations.

How much time do we spend trying to understand our own particular form of genius and designing our lives to live in our genius rather than trying to develop the wherewithal to conform to a different role?

How much time do we spend trying to understand our people and their individual genius so that we can help them craft a place in our organisation where they can flourish and be nourished in their genius rather than condemn them to mediocrity in a role that simply doesn’t align?

As Einstein once said “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

So the questions for today are:

•  How much time and effort do you have in honest conversations with yourself about where your true genius lies?
•  To what extent are you prepared to follow that path?
•  If you have others in your team, how often do you have conversations with them to help the both of you discover their genius, their passions?
•  What impact do you think allowing people to live in their genius might have on your organisation?
