Of course, whereas high levels of passion can be considered invaluable, in fact necessary, to fuel the founding of a successful business, like any strength it can hide or become a weakness.

Being fully vested in an undertaking may mean that we are over invested emotionally which in turn may result in our inability to make rational decisions. It may result in us deciding with the heart when the head should hold sway. Founding and growing a business is an emotional journey and being able to respond with emotion is a benefit, being driven by emotion is not usually a good thing.

I have a copy of Rudyard Kipling’s great poem ‘If’ on my office wall as a permanent reminder to seek a level in all things and to remind me and others of the need to treat those two imposters Triumph and Disaster just the same.

Heaven knows founding and growing a business will present you with plenty of opportunities to experience both and serves to remind me of the constant need for strengthening our emotional intelligence and particularly those emotional competencies like self control.

So the questions for today are:

• Given the strength of your passion and purpose how much attention are you paying to balance and grounding?
• Do you have someone who is close to you but not ‘in the fight’ to provide you with perspective?
• On a scale of 0 to 10 how likely are you to be too emotionally invested in the business?
• What are you doing about it?
