Hammer
The person who only has a hammer sees every problem as a nail.
As human beings we tend to stick with what we know. We find a pattern of behaviour that works and we stick with it. Picture the classic image of a British tourist abroad and when the native doesn’t understand his English he repeats the same thing just slower and louder and comically expects the native to suddenly understand him.
We do the same thing with running a business. Entrepreneurs are typically people who are fast, driven and determined. They seem to be able to just make things happen and people bend to their will. They are far more likely to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission.
These behaviours are brilliant to get a business started but once that business is beyond the start up phase and moves into the scale up phase those behaviours are not just less appropriate, they can be the very behaviours that stop growth and cooperation.
A clear example of ‘what got you here won’t get you there’. For our founder to grow the business beyond its current level and avoid the hamster wheel of constantly starting building and busting, she must develop her behaviours beyond what got her here.
A hammer is excellent for driving a nail, but for fixing a Swiss watch? Not so much.
So the questions for this week are;
- Who do you know who has successfully scaled a business?
- What are their behaviours and mindset?
- How do they differ from yours?
- What can you learn and do differently?
