High Risk

As a business leader you are operating in a high stakes and a high risk environment. You are out on the edge in so many respects.

That appetite for risk is a prerequisite. In the beginning we probably don’t think about the risk too much. We are driven by the challenge, by the compulsion to build something or prove something, to make something happen. Without that appetite for risk there is no forward motion.

The more successful we become, the more we have to lose, whether that be financial or reputation and so the more risk averse we may become. That is a paradox that we have to master if we are to continue to build and to grow.

I have just watched the Isle of Man TT and I am awed by the likes of John McGuiness who at 53 still has the appetite and the courage, not to mention the skill and the ability to finish in the top 10 in the world’s most dangerous sport. Of course, in business longevity generally leads to more, not less ability. So time is on our side as long as we can keep the flame of desire burning.

A sure way of winning is to outlast the competition.

So the questions for this week are;

• Are you getting better with age?
• Are you getting wiser or just older?
• Are you learning more faster or less more slowly than 5 years ago?
• Why?
• What will you do about that?
