A Bias for Action

The amount of sheer work entrepreneurs can get through can be breathtaking, often while juggling all sorts of other priorities like bringing up children, leading charities and contributing to society.

Often entrepreneurs are identifiable as people who can just make things happen and Jim Collins noted that a bias for action is usually one of the signature traits of an entrepreneur.

At various stages of the development of the individual and the business this can be a distinct advantage, it is also one of those strengths that can turn, slowly and then all at once into a weakness. If the only way the entrepreneur can make things happen is by doing them himself he will not only deny his team the privilege of developing that strength, he will be forever chained to doing it himself, and that will ultimately wear him out and limit the future growth of the enterprise.

We must never confuse activity with progress and the time that we spend doing is time that we cannot spend thinking planning and preparing which will ultimately get us to the next level.

So the questions for this week are;

  • To what extent is the way you are working now limiting your growth?
  • Are the habits and skills that got you here now preventing you from getting there?
  • What pivots do you now need to make?
  • Have you got yourself stuck albeit at a higher level?
