Aligned and Engaged

Einstein pointed out that “The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is comprehensible in mathematical terms. Yet understanding human behaviour remains elusive to such neat equations.”

As business leaders we are building machines where almost all of the parts are people. No wonder it can feel so difficult.

Alignment is business’s most powerful force. “If you could get all the people in the organization rowing in the same direction, you could dominate any industry, in any market, against any competition, at any time.” As Pat Lencioni taught us.

So given the vagaries and complexities of human nature the challenge of aligning our team around a common goal is immense and yet we know, because we can see, that winning teams are doing exactly that each and every day.

How aligned is your team to achieve their joint objectives?

So the questions for this week are;

• Does your team have a common goal?
• That is clear and numerically defined?
• Can each individual accurately describe what winning looks like?
• Are the team emotionally engaged with that mission?
• How do you know?
• Do you measure it?
