Courage

It’s hard to lead a cavalry charge if you think you look funny on a horse. Without doubt the biggest prerequisite for running a business and leading people is courage.

The courage to take your destiny in your own hands and do what so many people dare not do and start to run a business is obvious but almost every day that courage is tested. It is about having the courage to say no. Saying no to clients that want you to do something that doesn’t align with your vision or with your principles or your strategy. Saying no to the requests of your team that similarly don’t align.

It is having the courage to listen to views other than your own. Having the courage to exit the people who, nice though they may be, don’t fit with the culture you are consciously cultivating. Having the courage to redirect a team member real time , in the moment, when their actions or decisions are below expectations. Having the courage to farewell the profit opportunities that may be attractive but that will also distract or divert you from your real mission.

The courage to do the right thing when the rest of the world would do the easy thing.

So the questions for this week are;

· How often are your decisions and actions compromised through an absence of courage, do you think?

· How might your team members answer that same question?

· What is one thing that you can do to be able to find the courage you need in the moment you need it?
