Blind Spot 1

In 1955, psychologists Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham developed a tool called the Johari Window to help people understand their relationships with themselves and others.

It consists of four quadrants; known to self, known to others, not known to self and not known to others. The blind spot refers to the quadrant that is known to others but not known to self.

The greater the shared-understanding quadrant, the more potential a relationship has to flourish. We grow the shared understanding quadrant by shrinking the blind spot quadrant and we do this by listening to feedback. This in turn makes us more self aware.

That is why self awareness is sometimes described as a leadership superpower.

So the questions for this week are;

  • What is your strategy for gathering feedback? Do you have one?
  • How formal is it?
  • How effective is it?
  • What might be the result of better levels of feedback for you?
