Specific Outcomes
It is easy to take stuff for granted. We take every new day, every sunrise and sunset for granted. The great thing about a New Year is that it happens regularly but not often and so it can cause us to reflect and review and hopefully to launch new plans or at least revisit some old ones.
I think it would be a shame to treat the start of a New Year with the same run of the mill disdain that we treat the start of a new day. I am at the stage where I have seen lots of new years. There must be more behind me than there are in front of me and there is a temptation to just slide into this year as easily as we slid out of last year but I think about the wise words of one of my coaches a long time ago.
I was going to Fiji for a coaching conference. It was a long and expensive trip. Just before I left she asked me what were the top three outcomes I had planned to get from my investment. I didn’t have any. She reminded me that if I didn’t have any specific outcomes in mind, that is probably what I would get.
Now I am a lot more purposeful about the outcomes I require from the investment of my time and energy.
So the questions for this week are;
- What are your top three outcomes from the investment of your time and energy this New Year?
- Be as specific as you can be. Remember that there is never accountability without metrics, so what is the number that will confirm you have done it?
- Who will you share your commitment with? It is a lot easier to let yourself off the hook than a true friend.
