Inspiration
The easiest way to help team members take ownership of their part of the organisation is by inspiring them to understand the importance of their role. To help them understand that the work they are doing is important, it is significant, and it has a worthwhile purpose.
Ken Blanchard talks about ‘worthwhile work’ in his writings. I think, at heart, that we all want to feel that we are doing work that is worthwhile, that has meaning and significance other than providing an income. I am fortunate that I have always been able to find significance and pride in the work I was doing, whether that be a holiday job as a student or any of the many other jobs since then. Much like the title character in Mark Sanborn’s ‘Fred Factor’. I suspect that life would have been a whole lot different had I not been able to do that.
But not everybody has that ability nor to the same level.
The role of the leader then is to help people understand the importance of their work; its significance and the part it plays in the ability of the organisation to deliver the value, the contribution if you like that it makes to the world. To truly help them understand the value that they bring i8ndividually and collectively to the world.
Without that, why would anyone take any pride, care or ownership in the work they do?
So the questions for this week are;
- How clear are your team on the contribution the organisation makes to the world? (I usually refer to this as ‘Core Purpose)
- How often do you remind team members of the Core Purpose and their part in it?
- Is your Core Purpose emotionally charged?
- Does your Core purpose inspire?
- On a scale of 0 to 10 how inspired are your team?
