Ownership
‘They are doing OK but they don’t really own their part of the business’ is a cry I hear often. Ownership is important. We need people to completely own their part of the organisation to really be successful.
I accept that some individuals will naturally take ownership more readily and more frequently than others, but what can you as the leader do to help the others?
People are generally more committed to the goals that they set themselves. We are all more motivated by our own reasons than by someone else’s reasons. What would happen if you encouraged people to set their own objectives and to define their own standards? They would be more committed to them. Simple. The leader’s job is then to make sure they are all aligned to the organisation’s objectives and they are of a high enough standard. Simple again.
So rather than setting targets why not try coaching your people to set and achieve their own standards?
So the questions for this week are;
- How often do you tell people what their targets are?
- How often do you help people to set and raise their own standards?
- How could you easily alter that balance?
- What might be the impact in doing so?
