Culture Eats Strategy For Breakfast
Usually attributed to Peter Drucker there is a lot of truth in this phrase.
The culture of the organisation is the highest priority of the CEO. Two of the levers that the CEO has to influence culture are the Core Values of the organisation and the people appointed to senior positions in the organisation.
Core Values are those basic behavioural rules that are so important. For Core Values to be effective and alive in the organisation they must be modelled / lived by the senior leaders, including the CEO. If senior leaders live and breathe the Core Values then there is every chance the rest of the team will too. If they don’t, they won’t, and the Core Values and the senior leaders will be viewed as an exercise in hypocrisy and b.s.
So for culture to be strong the selection of the senior leaders is paramount, as is holding them to account for their behaviour in alignment to the Core Values.
How is your culture? Is it working well for you or not so much?
So the questions for this week are;
- On a scale of 0 to 10 how do you rate your culture? If people are not really engaged, there is division and infighting then give it a low score. If everyone is fully engaged and committed to working together then a higher score will be appropriate.
- How do your people rate their culture? You do ask them don’t you?
- How appropriate are your Core Values?
- How aligned are your senior leaders’ behaviour to your Core Values?
- If they aren’t 100% aligned, what are you doing about it?
