The Speed Of Learning

The futurist, Alvin Toffler asserted that “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.”. as we live in a world with an unprecedented rate of change, the speed at which we learn both individually and collectively is not only a thing, but in terms of elite performance could be the thing.

So part of the intellectual challenge is how can we learn, collectively and quickly.

It strikes me that one of the determinants of how quickly we can learn is the rhythm of meetings, where we collectively dissect what happened. Absent that discipline we don’t learn. Any sports team that doesn’t thoroughly, constructively and honestly critique the video replay of yesterday’s game is simply destined to repeat the same performance and mistakes without improvement.

In the military any action would result in an ‘after action review’. Ex fighter pilot Hasard Lee  will talk about how long he and his trainers would spend debriefing every training flight. Typically spending much more time in the debrief than on the exercise itself.

What about you and your team. Typically after a day of action, what is your discipline to learn from the experiences of the day? What have you done to capture the learnings of last month? By now you will have had the financial results from last month. Have you pulled them apart together to learn and improve? Why not?.

So the questions for this week are;

• What are your daily / weekly / monthly and yearly collective learning rituals?
• Are they fit for purpose?
• What can you do to improve the rituals?
• What can you do to improve the process?
• How do you capture and communicate those learnings?
