A Downward Trend
I have just read an article from the Gallup organisation who provide measurements of the workplace across the globe. The headline reads that US engagement levels hits an 11 year low.
Employee engagement trends are significant because they link to many important performance outcomes crucial to organizational leaders such as productivity, employee retention, customer service, safety incidents, quality of work and profitability.
Historically, engagement levels are shockingly low and generally declining. This is a problem for two major reasons. Low engagement levels indicate that a significant proportion of any workforce are not invested in the health / sustainability or future of their organisation (am I bothered?) and of those people who are not engaged there will be a significant amount of them who are actively disengaged. In other words not only are they not bothered but they are actively going against the grain and acting as terrorists within to undermine the efforts of the rest.
Gallup surveys are readily accessible if you want to delve deeper.
So the questions for this week are;
- How conscious am I of engagement levels in my business?
- Can I or should I have a measure of that?
- To what degree are the things that I am doing or not doing driving that engagement number down?
- What is that costing us?
