Play to your strengths
When we play to our strengths we can do more, more easily and successfully with less effort and with less stress. It sounds ideal doesn’t it? It also sounds like a statement of the obvious. However what is not so obvious is knowing what our strengths are.
I grew up in a world where we were never encouraged to focus on our strengths but on our weaknesses. I was very good at certain subjects at school but never encouraged to become really great at them, instead I was forced to do extra home work in the subjects I was bad at.
A few years ago I became a Gallup Strengthsfinder Coach so I could help people leverage their strengths better, and it has been revolutionary for them and for me. I have recently revisited my strengths profile and read Stand Out 2.0 from Marcus Buckingham so I am buzzing with the insights that I have been given.
I was talking to a friend a couple of weeks ago who had done strengthsfinder and knew her top 5 strengths but had never been shown how to use that knowledge and those strengths to achieve more, more easily and with less stress.
This strikes me as a complete waste. Self awareness has a place but self awareness without any change in behaviour is nothing more than an academic past time.
So the questions for this week are;
- How are you going to discover your strengths?
- Once you know your strengths how can you change your behaviour to deploy them successfully?
- What difference can you imagine this change making in your life and the lives of others you impact?
