Older or Better?
Getting older is inevitable. That is something we have no control over. It would be daft to confuse getting older with getting better. For sure with more experience the odds are that most people will get somewhat better at whatever they do. One would expect that you would make a better fist of baking your 39th cake than you did your first.
However repetition itself will not guarantee that we get better fast enough and in a world that is changing at warp speed, as ours is, you can guarantee that it won’t. at best we are likely to become marginally better at a skill and mindset that has no place other than in a museum or history book. As Jack Welch once said ‘If the rate of change on the outside exceeds the rate of change on the inside, the end is near.’
We all need a conscious and deliberate strategy to learn and develop the skills and mindset that we need. Getting better doesn’t happen by accident. It is a result of deliberate practice. You’ll be the same person today as you’ll be in five years, except for the people you meet and the books that you read, and the action you take.
So that you don’t confuse getting older with getting better, the questions for today are:
- What is your strategy to learn from people who have already done the hard yards?
- What are the next three books that you will read?
- How much have you set aside in your personal budget for your own education and development?
- Who will you hire as your coach?
