There’s always another level

They say that even if you play sport at a high level, the move to the international level will severely test you. Generally the speed and intensity is at an altogether different level.

I recently read an interesting book on the changes likely to occur should you sell some or all of your business to private equity investors. The author made the exact same point.

That thought resonated with me.

I have been aware for some time that when I help a business to grow, I am, in fact, growing the business owner to grow the business. I am helping them professionalise their business by professionalising themselves first. I am giving them a taste and an experience of life in the higher leagues.

I know I have operated businesses for some of the most professional PLC’s in the land and also for others, who were less professional. The demands were very different.

If you want to double the size of your business you really need to ask yourself, do you have what it takes to be offered the self-same role at double the wages working for a PLC? Because if you can’t raise your performance to that level, in truth, you are going to struggle to grow your business to that level and still hold it all together.

So the questions for today are:

1. What do I need to learn to do that will double my personal market value?
2. Who do I have to become to lead a business twice the size of the current one?
3. Who can help me grow into that person?
4. Have I got the courage and ambition to commit to that journey?
