The A Player (3)
A couple of weeks ago I defined an A player as someone who consistently performs well and who consistently displays behaviour that matches our Core Values.
I have written about measuring performance but what are Core Values and why are they important?
A value is something that we, individually, hold to be important. Core Values then are those things which we as a collective, a community, hold to be important. Oftentimes when we fall out, it is because of our values not being aligned.
Every community or group of people will have Core Values, but rarely are they examined and codified.
Our values are some of the things that define and describe our uniqueness, but as values are often to be found below the level of consciousness, we don’t always realise what our values are or when they are being honoured or dishonoured.
It makes sense then to define our Core Values as a business because once they are known they can be maintained and preserved. The danger is, if this hasn’t happened, we may find the character of our enterprise being influenced and changing without our conscious knowledge.
Have you thought about your Core Values? Are they clearly defined and codified- written down?
Whether they are or not, the question for today is, what are our Core Values? What is it about the way we behave that makes us uniquely us?
- Think about how we behave when we are at our best.
- What are the things that we hold to be important that drives that behaviour?
- Are those Core Values written down and alive in the business?
