The A Player (2)
Last week I wrote about the definition of an A player as someone who consistently performs at a high level and consistently behaves in line with our Core Values. It follows that to be able to identify an A player we need to be able to measure performance.
Many businesses do have performance measures, and that in itself creates a problem. If someone performs well on 2 out of 5 measures and not so well on the other 3, how then do we classify them?
Is it not possible to come up with a single key measure that is the definitive, indisputable measure? You could have other measures as long as there was one single definitive measure that had to be hit.
In the same way that the winner of a motor race is the first car to cross the line and that same car may or may not have led the most laps or had the fastest lap. There is one clear metric that matters above all others.
What would it be for your individual team members?
This is not an easy question to answer but I believe it can be answered and answering it depends upon the clarity of why the job holder gets paid.
So the questions to ponder for this week are;
- What would be the one ‘reason I get paid’ for your senior individuals?
- What is the best measure of that?
- If both you and the job holder had absolute clarity on that, would you be more aligned and focussed?
Many successful business owners eventually hit a wall on growth and struggle to climb it alone. When you work with me you get a fresh perspective, a solid plan, and customised coaching so you can grow and scale your business safely and at speed.
