Leadership has never been easy and as we approach the end of the first quarter of the 21st century it only gets more demanding and even more challenging.
It is likely that your current team spans at least four generations. That has never happened before and each generation has its own preferences and priorities. Within each generation there will be nuances between each and every individual and people expect and need to be treated as individuals. The needs and expectations of each gender are not only different from each other but they are also constantly changing and at different rates so even the broad heuristics of leadership are no longer adequate, meaning we cannot use a one size fits all approach without alienating a good proportion of the team.
More than ever the quality of flexibility becomes a major requirement for the leader. The modern leader needs to be able to understand all of the various people in her team both on the level of individuals and as a collective. The chances are that whatever you believe and think you understand about people is at best out of date and certainly applicable to fewer and fewer team members.
