Scaling People 2

Last week I wrote about the importance of studying to learn more about the science of people; how they think, how they learn, what role emotion plays, where those emotions come from.

I found that type of learning very useful, after all I am in the people business, right? Arent we all (no matter what our product might be)?

However I soon learned that nothing applies to everybody all the time and I got both frustrated and fascinated in equal measure with the exceptions to the heuristics. Understanding people is useful but understanding the individual is a super power.

We live in an age where people no longer want to be seen as the same as anyone else. More and more, people want to be recognised as individuals, as different. Take a look out of the window and the lack of conformity is evident.

As people we need our leaders to see us as individuals. To be an effective leader we need to be able to customise our interactions with every individual in every situation.

This is one of the reasons why leadership in the 21^st century is so much more complex than it has ever been and why it is so important to really understand people.

So the question for today is

• How are you going to go deep on your study of how people work?
• What are you going to read?
• What are you going to study?
