My Top 5 Reads of 2022

The top reads for me in 2022 is headed by ‘Love and Work’ by Marcus Buckingham.  Buckingham began his career with the Gallup organisation and describes himself as a psychometrician. His findings are always rooted in research and this book gives a unique and valuable insight into the roots of the disenchantment that millions are feeling about the world of work resulting in ‘The Great Resignation’ and now ‘Quiet Quitting’

The second comes from veteran thought leader Tom Peters and what he believes will be his final book ‘Excellence now; extreme humanism’. It is a book overflowing with the distilled wisdom of over 40 years trying to understand excellence in business.

‘CEO Excellence’ by McKinsey senior partners Carolyn Dewar, Scott Keller is a well researched and evidenced book as is ‘Build it; the Rebel Playbook for world class employee engagement’ by Glenn Elliot et al. All four of these books share a common theme of helping people perform at their best in the world of work, which is after all what I think it is all about.

The (almost) final book is ‘Elite Minds’ by Dr Sam Beecham. Insights on how elite performers think by a top sports psychologist. I don’t think this is a new book, but it is new to me and has been a great addition to the library.

Finally I was recommended a book just last week- as an audiobook- something I don’t often do and it has to make it into this list. It is ‘High Performance; lessons from the best on becoming your best’ Jake Humphries and Damian Hughes have hosted a very successful high performance podcast for a few years now and this book is an entertaining and well ordered distillation of the major learnings from interviewing hundreds of high performing individuals across a whole spectrum of human achievement. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
