Trust

The news here in the UK is all about industrial unrest. It takes me back maybe 40 years.

I am reminded of one of the best books I have ever read, ‘The Speed of Trust’ by Stephen MR Covey. Subtitled ‘the one thing that changes everything’. I am noticing a lack of trust in so many areas at the moment and I wonder how much of a part does it play in ‘the great resignation’ and what we now refer to as ‘quiet quitting’

Trust is a heavily nuanced word and means different things to different people and in different contexts but however we define it its absence is costly.

It might mean we treat our people as though they can’t think or act for themselves. It might mean as leaders we look after ourselves in preference to looking after the people in our care. It might simply mean that we speak with a forked tongue.

Whatever, trust is very closely linked with engagement, resilience and tolerance as well as the general well being of the community.

To do:

1. Reflect on how often you destroy or diminish any trust that there may be?
2. Who can you speak to that might give you an honest and unbiased opinion?
3. How much do you understand the concept of trust and psychological safety?
4. Where can you find a trusted advisor who can help you here?
