Teamwork

I have a great photo of a rowing 8 in their boat (think the Oxford / Cambridge boat race) and I have pasted a quote from Pat Lencioni beneath it which says. “If you could get all the people in the organization rowing in the same direction, you could dominate any industry, in any market, against any competition, at any time.”

It allows me to ask, ‘If the two at the front thought the game plan was to start off slow and build up to a crescendo and the two at the back thought the game plan was do make a blistering start so they could get out in front, and the four in the middle were wishing they were on the golf course or watching the telly, how effective would this crew be?’

Now think about your team. How confident are you that they know the game plan and that the game plan they know is a) the same game plan and b) the best game plan and finally c) that they own and are committed to that game plan?

Do you actually have a game plan? Do you know what your priority is for the next 90 days? Do your team know? If the answer is no, how can you expect to have the power of a team that is all pulling individually and collectively in the same direction?

It sounds so perfectly simple and obvious doesn’t it? But common sense is rarely common practice. Oh, and here is another wrinkle, just announcing it from your ivory tower isnt going to make any difference. If people don’t ‘own’ the plan, they won’t enact it.
