Here We Go Again

During the pandemic I made a conscious decision to go on a ‘news diet’, limiting the amount of doom and gloom I consumed every day. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made and I have maintained the discipline ever since. I have never really felt out of touch. The important stuff does filter through but the constant repetition of bad news is, I believe, not conducive to good mental health.

Despite the news diet even I am aware of the ever growing dark clouds that are on the horizon. Rising prices, rising energy costs and all the rest. You don’t need me to repeat it all.  It got me thinking about all of the recessions and crises that I have experienced in my working life and as a client said last week, ‘we just sailed on through’.

I now think of the economic climate in much the same way as I think about the weather. I can’t do anything about it, so why worry. I ride motorbikes and drive a soft top car and despite our national propensity to complain about the British weather it is very rarely that the British weather stops me from enjoying either. As the old saying goes there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing.

If we are facing bad weather it would make sense to make sure we have the most appropriate clothing. Actually that is true whether the weather is good or bad. As Jim Rohn pointed out all of those years ago, we can’t do anything about the wind but we can set our sails appropriately.

Whatever the climate, some businesses will thrive and grow and others won’t. Which one are you going to choose? It is your choice, no one else’s.
