The Way We Are Working Isn’t Working

The Gallup organisation has been measuring the level of employee engagement across the globe for years now. It is low- shockingly low- about 15%, and it isn’t getting any better.

In the USA they estimate that over 50 million people have left the world of work since the pandemic, in what Americans are calling ‘the great resignation’.

Whichever way you look at it the world of work is not working for many, many people. Here in the UK almost everyone is talking about the difficulty they are having in recruiting. There are now more job vacancies than unemployed people to fill them. This is a first.

I have a fundamental belief that work is a place where we deserve to feel nourished, appreciated, respected and valued. A place where we can find fulfilment, fun and purpose working with capable colleagues to do worthwhile work and improve the world in some way.

It saddens me that for so many people it fails to deliver. Of course, some of that is on us, as individuals. We often don’t even try to find meaning, purpose or fulfilment in our work, but too often that flame is snuffed out by plain bad management, a lack of leadership and environments designed to remove any trace of humanity in the endeavour.

Mine is a simple philosophy. Everyone wants and deserves to feel like a valued member of a winning team on an inspiring mission. When we can articulate that and help our people feel that way, everyone benefits; customers, shareholders team members, our community. Everyone.
