Elevating Our Thinking

“We can’t solve our problems with the same level of thinking that we were at when we created them” asserted Albert Einstein, or at least I hope he did. I use that quote often enough.

He makes a strong and valid point and it begs the question, ‘how do I elevate my thinking?’

Failure to constantly elevate ones thinking inevitably results in becoming stuck. In other words, not being able to find solutions to the problems that we will inevitably create. This is true in our personal as well as business lives.

It is very difficult to elevate one’s thinking if we live in a bubble. A goldfish has no idea of the vast plains of the Serengeti from his bowl on your windowsill. If you spend your life becoming an expert in making envelopes or building conservatories you probably have no idea about the complexities of selling pharmaceuticals, however much that knowledge could benefit you.

The only real way to elevate our thinking is by broadening our experience. Travelling and reading would be two good ways, albeit relatively passive ways. The best way is through conversation. Through structured, purposeful and repeated interaction with someone with expertise and your best interests at heart. There are a lot of bar room philosophers out there with opinions aplenty all of them of dubious validity.

Charlie Jones put it best when he said “You’ll be the same person today as you’ll be in five years, except for the people you meet and the books that you read.”

Do you have a deliberate strategy locked in place to elevate your thinking by having repeated structured development conversations, or do you favour being stuck?
