The Ratchet Effect
Hi, Team Massive Result’s Thursday’s Thoughts
The Ratchet Effect There are many reasons why I use the spiral as the logo for Team Massive Results. I believe that in life, and in business, we are either growing or dying, spiralling up or spiralling down, and we have a choice as to which it is. The fact is that spiralling upwards takes effort. If we are not making that effort then the direction of travel will not be in an upward direction. If we are not deliberately moving upwards you can be sure that natural forces (gravity) will ensure that we are spiralling downwards. As human beings, like all other life forms, we are either growing or dying. So how do we make sure that we are growing? That comes down to the ratchet effect and it starts with learning. We learn a little and we implement a little. That is growing. Learn a bit more and implement a bit better. That process is at the very heart of self development and coaching. That is the ratchet effect. Our ability to learn and then implement is therefore at the heart of our ability to grow. Learning demands a particular attitude of mind. The American psychiatrist Thomas Szasz described it neatly when he said, “Every act of conscious learning requires the willingness to suffer an injury to one’s self-esteem. That is why young children, before they are aware of their own self-importance, learn so easily; and why older persons, especially if vain or important, cannot learn at all.” To learn we have to be prepared to admit that we don’t know it all. We have to have a flexibility of mind, a lack of ego and a preparedness to suffer an injury to our self-esteem. Learning almost always precedes implementation and so if we are not actively learning our level of implementation must necessarily be either stagnating or moving backwards. Peter Drucker once said “My ancestors were printers in Amsterdam from 1510 or so until 1750, and during that entire time they didn’t have to learn anything new.” I would say that today if we are not learning something new between ten past three and ten to six we are in danger of falling behind. So I wonder what your process of learning is. How do you ensure that you are growing? How many books do you read each month? How many hours of conscious learning do you chalk up each week, each month? How many thought leaders have you interacted with this week (apart from the one you are reading right now)?
