When They Zig, You Zag

We have seen a number of tough financial times over recent years and it is always worth remembering that as well as the devastation these times cause there are also lots of people who flourish in difficult times. They are the people who can see the opportunity and who aren’t prepared to miss it. They see the opportunity where most people see problems. The challenges we face today with the global pandemic are unique. They are unlike any challenge our planet has ever seen before, and whilst things are tough there are certainly opportunities. Despite the government’s actions to keep people in employment, the furlough scheme will come to an end and the tide of rising unemployment could turn into a tsunami. One of the greatest complaints over recent years has been the lack of available talent. Perhaps this is the single biggest opportunity to come out of the current crisis.

You will never have a greater chance of increasing the talent density within your business, and as Jim Collins wrote: “Those who build great companies understand that the ultimate throttle on growth for any great company is not markets, or technology, or competition, or products. It is the one thing above all others; the ability to get and keep enough of the right people.”

One of the smartest strategic decisions you can take is to increase the talent density within the business; that means the proportion of A players rather than the overall number of people. So, when others are shedding talent, why don’t you look to acquire the cream of the crop. When they zig, you zag.

Getting the right people in the right seats is one of the most important set of decisions in any business and the one that we have the least expertise in.
