Still The River Flows

Mental health, employee well-being, resilience and purpose are concepts that probably weren’t in many leader’s world picture even 18 months ago. One of the effects of the pandemic is that they need to be now, because they will be in the awareness of the people who work with you.

A recent survey in the US by McKinsey showed that nearly two thirds of the people surveyed said that Covid-19 had caused them to reflect on their purpose in life and nearly half said they were reconsidering the kind of work they do, with millennials three times more likely to say they were re-evaluating work. Here in the UK the country is starting to open up again, but I encourage anyone who thinks they are returning to a world of work as it was when we locked down, to think again. Too many things have changed for that to be even possible. There is an old adage that you can’t step into the same river twice and the river of workplace leadership has certainly shifted at an alarming rate. How equipped are you to deal with the emotional and human challenges of a post lockdown world?

There are lots of challenges in the world but a business that is run well can benefit the world more than almost anything else, creating purpose, dignity, and wealth in honest and worthwhile work, but it is a competitive place in which to thrive.
