On Teams 1

I am a big fan of teams. I think I always have been and I don’t mean Microsoft’s Zoom competitor. I mean a team of people working together towards a common purpose. I have always enjoyed being part of a team, either at work or in play. I have always enjoyed leading a team and as a leader I believe that a team is the biggest single multiplier of human talent that there is.

Having read & researched a lot on teams I also realise that whether to operate as a team – as opposed to a working group- is in fact a choice and in many circumstances a working group can be just as effective as a team. However, so far, whenever I have discussed this with a team they have always chosen to team rather than not to team. I think there is something in the human psyche that appreciates being part of a team. However performing as a team is not an easy thing to achieve and in my recent experience the reality often falls far short of the goal and becoming a ‘high performance’ team is rare indeed. I suspect that being a member of a poorly performing team is as disappointing as going to a good restaurant for a celebration and having a bad experience. It is likely to stop us wanting to do it again. It turns out that there are specific essential conditions that have to be in place for a team to perform at even a reasonable level, according to research completed by GEI Partners and Ei World. So there are a number of known ingredients, although creating a suitable dish from those ingredients requires a lot of skill, we can identify the ingredients at least. And we can learn the skills. Over the next few weeks I am going to share some of those team performance essentials with you in the hope that we can help to form better, more effective and successful teams because it is so much fun, and so satisfying and essential to our wellbeing that we feel ourselves to be valued members of a winning team on an inspiring mission. I hope this will be of value to you.

I am on a mission to help business leaders get better financial results with less stress and more time to enjoy it and I believe that when businesses are well run they benefit everybody; employees, customers, suppliers, shareholders and leaders alike.
