Making Better Art

Hi, Team Massive Result’s Thursday’s Thoughts Making Better Art I often feel that we are looking for an instruction book, or a manual on how to run a business, better, more profitably or with less hassle, and heaven knows there are enough people who would write books and make presentations that would have us believe that such a thing exists. In his book, The Icarus Deception, Seth Godin claims that building a business is the act of an artist. Starting and growing a business is a creative act and as such there is no “how to” manual. We are doing something new, we are creating something that didn’t exist before. We are creating something for which there isn’t, nor can there ever be, a manual. He says, “An artist is someone who uses bravery, insight, creativity, and boldness to challenge the status quo.”; an exact description of an entrepreneur. Remember that Peter Drucker said “the entrepreneur always searches for change, responds to it, and exploits it as an opportunity.”. So looking for that book of instructions to tell us how to run a business might be wishful thinking but that does not mean that we shouldn’t seek out appropriate help. Artists have always had recourse to help, in the form of muses, mentors, critics, supporters and challengers. Great artists have always sought to improve and to learn; to improve their techniques and to learn best practice but not to copy. They have always operated best in communities where they can learn, challenge and be challenged; where they could experiment and fail and try again and fail and try again and eventually succeed. In many ways that describes the role of the coach. Someone who will allow his client the space to try and who can be the secure base providing the safe haven encouraging him to venture out further than he otherwise might; the critical friend who will be on your side but who will also trade in the truth. Someone who will watch the client’s swing, as Tiger Woods referred to it. One appropriate quotation runs “Going into business for yourself, becoming an entrepreneur, is the modern-day equivalent of pioneering on the old frontier.”  And well it might be but even those pioneers performed best when they could learn from someone. So if growing your business, your life or your career is indeed art, who is helping you to create better art? As Seth Godin observed “When your art fails, make better art.” Our next art class is next Tuesday, where we will be looking at best practice and challenging you to make better art, create massive results and generate more profit.
