An Inspiring Mission
I believe everyone wants to feel like a valued member of a winning team on an inspiring mission in their work lives. For the younger among us (millennials and Generation Z specifically) the need for a sense of purpose is very high. Much higher than for previous generations for whom survival was the primary concern.
I also believe that the degree to which any individual feels like a valued member of a winning team on an inspiring mission is on their immediate manager or supervisor.
As leaders, if we fail to help our people achieve these feelings, not only will we be doing the business a disservice, by not giving our people enough reason to play at their very best, but we will be doing a significant disservice to the people we work with.
As Lazlo Bock, one time head of people at Google said “Whatever you’re doing, it matters to someone. And it should matter to you. As a manager, your job is to help your people find that meaning.”
Are you struggling to recruit at the moment? Did you know that it easier to get a place at Harvard than it is to get a job with Google? They have literally hundreds of people competing for each place at their offices across the world. Maybe one of the factors is that they help people find that meaning.
Failing to do so changes any job from ‘an inspiring mission’ to simply swapping their time for your money and reduces it to clocking on, hanging around for a number of hours and then clocking off in return for a pay cheque every so often. Is it any wonder it is so difficult to recruit and get an elevated level of performance from your people?
Many successful business owners eventually hit a wall on growth and struggle to climb it alone. When you work with me you get a fresh perspective, a solid plan, and customised coaching so you can grow and scale your business safely and at speed.
